District 4 Prosecutor’s Office first prosecutor under investigation by DNA

Mihai Betelie, the head of the District Four Prosecutor’s Office, was picked up yesterday morning by National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) prosecutors and taken for hearings on suspicion of corruption deeds. Mediafax reports that prosecutors received the go-ahead from the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) to search Betelie’s home and office. “We mention that prosecutor Mihai Betelie is under investigation for offences under the DNA’s jurisdiction,” a CSM press release states. Judicial sources say that First Prosecutor Mihai Betelie is suspected to have gotten involved in commercial operations or financial transactions using information obtained as a result of his position. According to the quoted sources, Betelie is being investigated for infringing on the provisions of art. 12, paragraph a) of the DNA organisation and operation Law 78/2000. Such deeds are liable to prison terms of 1 to 5 years. Two more persons are also the subject of the investigation. It appears the prosecutor has been monitored for several months. Betelie, a former fist-prosecutor at the Prosecutor’s Office of the District 1 Court of Law, got his current post by contest. This is the second time he caught the DNA prosecutors’ attention, after his first brush with the law resulted in the criminal investigation against him being dropped.
