ShortsUP Comedy Night

The world’s finest short-reel productions, coming to Bucharest.

On Saturday from 8pm, Bucharest’s Scala Cinema hosts ShortsUP Comedy Night. Nearly three hours worth of comedy in under 20 minute-long “shots”, a funny exhibition including objects and posters made using pre-computer era graphics or live caricatures are just a few of the things on offer on the occasion. “West Bank Story” (directed by Ari Sandel), the 2005 Oscar-winning comedy short, tells the tale of a couple trying to withstand an age-old war. An Israeli soldier and a Palestinian cashier fall in love despite all obstacles. The production “Runway” is signed by the celebrated Canadian animation artist Cordell Barker. A train runs into a cow on the tracks; with the captain nowhere to be found, the fireman is forced to desperately improvise in order to keep the train going. Among other distinctions, the film won an award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. “Two Laps” is a sample of tongue-in-cheek playfulness and cinematic artistry produced in 2010 by Owen Trevor, an eclectic director with a marked visual style, whose credentials include a series of “Top Gear” episodes. Filmed both on 35 and 16 mm-reel and in digital format, the short-reel production surprises the viewer through its delightful switches between visual styles. The Oscar-nominated short “Our Time Is Up” (dir. by Rob Pearlstein), the story of a faultless therapist, “Alice et moi” (dir. Micha Wald), the winner of the Clermont Ferrand Public’s Choice Award, as well as other first-rank short-reel productions make up the programme of the event, which consists exclusively of comedies. Tickets will be put on sale on January 21, one hour before the event, at the Scala Cinema. The price of a ticket is RON 20.
