Gopo Awards competition, open

The sixth edition of the Gopo Awards Gala, celebrating the most original contributions to local cinema over the past year, will take place on March 26, 2012, in Bucharest. Fiction, documentary and animation features, as well as short-reel productions, launched in the course of the last year are eligible to be included in this year’s competition. Following the model of more prestigious European film galas, such as the Goya, Cesar or BAFTA awards, the Gopo Awards Gala is the most important event dedicated to Romanian cinema.

Between January 19 to 31, 2012, Romanian directors and producers are invited to fill in the application available on the www.premiilegopo.ro official website and email it to roxana.elekes@premiilegopo.ro. The competition is open to Romanian productions or co-productions with a strong Romanian participation – fiction and non-fiction feature films or shorts – launched in festivals, in Romanian cinemas or on television, January 1 to December 31, 2011.

During the first five editions of the Gala Awards Gala, professionals from across the local filmmaking spectrum were awarded distinctions in recognition of their successful contribution to Romanian cinema. In 2011, the production “If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle” took home the highest number of Gopo trophies, for Best Film, Best Director (Florin Serban), Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Clara Voda), the Public’s Choice Award, Newcomer Award (George Pistereanu), as well as the first trophy for the Best Debut Film (Florin Serban) in the history of the gala. The Gopo Awards Gala is organized by the Romanian Film Promotion Association (APFR), with the support of the National Cinematography Centre (CNC) and Babel Communications.
