Romania starts building engine for IAR-111 supersonic aircraft

The Romanian Cosmonautics and Aeronautics Association (ARCA) started building an engine for the IAR-111 supersonic aircraft, Agerpres reports, quoted by realitatea.net. “We consider this engine the heart of the non-governmental space program, which will be fitted both on the IAR-111 plane, as well as on the Haas II rockets for the Google Lunar X Prize Competition and Haas III rockets which ARCA is currently designing,” ARCA chairman Dumitru Popescu stated. In the first stage, 18 engines will be produced for the tests scheduled to start by mid-2012. The IAR-111 plane engine was called “Executor”. ARCA initiated a fund-raising campaign for the building of the engine.
