70,000 Romanians have lost their social benefits because they have failed to pay their taxes. That includes single mothers that owe money to the state. According to realitatea.net, their social benefits were suspended for five months. Social benefits consist of sums given to Romanians living in poverty. In return, the beneficiaries engage in community work if possible. Here are some of the social benefits offered in Romania: allowance for low-income families, allowance for single parents, monthly indemnity for persons with handicap, scholarships for poor students and minimum salary. In the first half of January, Labour Minister Sulfina Barbu (PDL) asked for a list of persons that owe money to local budgets. It was discovered that 70,000 persons that were on that list were also on the list of persons that received social benefits.
