BNR January reserves down nearly EUR 500 M

The currency reserves of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) plummeted by close to EUR 500 M, to EUR 32.696 bln in January, following outflows of EUR 1.452 bln consisting, among others, of modified hard currency minimum reserves required of credit institutions, along with the payment of instalments and interest on public debt, Mediafax reports. Inflows totalled EUR 955 M last month, made up of modified hard currency minimum reserves made by credit institutions, the money put into the European Commission account, the accounts of the Finance Ministry, revenues from management of international reserves, and others.

On December 31, 2011 BNR reserves totalled EUR 33.193 bln. The late January gold reserve matched 103.7 tons and a value of 4.393 bln euro. Romania’s international reserves, hard currencies and gold, added up to EUR 37.089 bln on Jan 31, down from EUR 37.251 bln on December 31, 2011. The direct or Finance Ministry-guaranteed public debt hard currency payments due in February totalled EUR 180.36 M.
