First census results: Romania has 19 million people

Romania has a stable population of a little over 19 million, according to preliminary results of last autumn’s census, released by the National Statistics Institute (INS). According to the data, there are a total of 19,042,936 people who make up the country’s stable population. Almost a million people were declared absent for the country for a long period of time. Previous statistics in July last year put Romania’s population at over 21 million people. The census results also indicate that there are almost 7.1 million  households in Romania and 8.5 million housing units. About 2.8 per cent of housing units were not surveyed, the INS said, underlining that this figure accounts for the almost one million people whose entire family is gone abroad. Higher figures were reported in larger cities such as Bucharest, Timisoara, Iasi, Constanta and others. The INS also underlined that the results it released are temporary .
