Dinu Damaschin (55), arrested on charges of procurement, known as Monica Gabor’s “foster father”, died on Friday at the Bacau Court of Appeal, just as the court was to pronounce a ruling on the appeal he had filed against the decision to extend the preventive arrest term in his case. “The case had been tried, the court was to pronounce its ruling and, while the panel of judges was out deliberating, Dinu Damaschin began to feel faint,” the spokesman for the Bacau Court of Appeal, Catalin Serban, stated. Dinu Damaschin’s lawyer, Petru Ivascu, told Mediafax his client had been on hunger strike since December 22, when he was detained and taken into custody by the Bacau Police. Although he had been on hunger strike for so long, Damaschin did not file any petition for release from preventive arrest for medical reasons, sources in the judiciary stated. Petru Ivascu added he had managed to speak very briefly with Dinu Damaschin, before the judges came in, and the latter seemed very feeble and was speaking with great difficulty.
