Traffic Police is against the provisional driving license

The Traffic Police chief criticised the new regulations proposed by the government in the Traffic Law, which include a provisional driving license that would allow its holder to drive even without a valid driving license. In an interview published yesterday by ‘Evenimentul Zilei,’ Lucian Dinita said that the number of youths who drive without a license is already worryingly high, and more than one million speeding tickets were issued last year. “I am against the provisional driving license! In the UK, rookie drivers must be supervised by someone with at least five years of experience. Even now, many youths drive without a license in Romania. Some have committed accidents,” Dinita warned. According to the source, the major problem of drivers is speed. “Instead of increasing fines, I would suspend the driving license (for speeding). A total 1,074,976 speeding tickets have been issued last year,” the Traffic Police chief added. In a different interview with ‘Jurnalul National,’ Dinita says that the proposal of enforcing the provisional driving license did not come from the Traffic Police, because the institution lost the attribute of issuing driving licenses. “Since 2006, Traffic Police is no longer in charge with the driving exam. These are proposals made by the people of the driving licenses and registrations department, which are under the jurisdiction of prefects. (…)”.On the other hand, prohibiting radar detectors and the access of ATVs on public roads, along with enforcing the contravention ticket are the proposals of the Traffic Police for the draft ‘National Road Strategy 2011-2020.’ Anyway, according to Dinita, the strategy has a symbolic value, “an idea of principle, taken from the other states.”
