Boxing: Povetkin survives Huck to defend WBA belt

Alexander Povetkin narrowly held on to his WBA heavyweight title with a points decision over Marco Huck in Stuttgart, according to Eurosport.Povetkin, who was looked beaten in both the fourth and seventh rounds, held on to defeat the WBO cruiserweight champion when judges John Coyle of England and Stanley Christodoulou of South Africa scored the fight 116-113 and 116-112 respectively. The third judge, Belgian Phillipe Verbeke, saw it as a draw at 114-114.“He couldn’t stand anymore and he’s been judged champion. The guy couldn’t stand,” Huck complained as the result was greeted by boos by the crowd in the Porsche Arena.“A lot of people who saw this fight see me as the winner.”After a cagey opening three rounds, Huck sparked into life in the fourth with a series of combination blows left Povetkin staggering back against the ropes. The Yugoslav-born German pounced again in the seventh, when Povetkin was saved only by the bell as Huck failed to land the knock-out blow that would have seen him snatch the belt from the Russian.Instead Povetkin, making a second defence of the title he won in August last year, recovered his composure to survive the final five rounds and secure the title.“I underestimated him,” the 32-year-old Russian said. “Perhaps I didn’t take this fight seriously enough.”Elsewhere, Marcos Maidana suffered just the third loss of his career when Devon Alexander used the home crowd to his advantage to secure a unanimous points decision.Alexander, who has lost just one of his 24 fights, stuck with WBO super lightweight champion Maidana throughout the welterweight fight, with the judges scoring the bout 100-90, 100-90 and 99-91.On the same card, Adrien Broner successfully defended his WBO super featherweight title, securing a fourth round knockout of Eloy Perez at the Scottrade Center in St Louis. Broner was in control from the bell against the smaller and lighter Perez, landing a heavy right in the fourth to extend his undefeated record to 23 wins with 19 knockouts.
