Liberal Senator Teodor Melescanu has been proposed by President Traian Basescu as the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE), Mediafax and realitatea.net inform. Currently marginalised in PNL after a conflict with party President Crin Antonescu, Melescanu has been Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defence. ‘Under article 65, letter h) of the Romanian Constitution, President Traian Basescu has proposed to the Parliament the appointment to the position as Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Mr. Teodor Melescanu,’ a Presidential Administration release states. Teodor Melescanu is going to be heard by the SIE Committee on Tuesday at noon, a parliament sitting having been already scheduled for the validation or the new SIE chief. ‘I assume the president discussed this with Teodor Melescanu before nominating him,’ said Senate Speaker Vasile Blaga. Melescanu has suspended himself as a PNL member.
