Silvestru Tomuta, director of the Trade Union’s Culture Centre in Sibiu, was detained by anti-corruption prosecutors yesterday because he asked a company EUR 2,000 in exchange for renting a space within the institution’s building. According to the National Anti-corruption Office (DNA), from December 2011 to February 2012, Silvestru asked the representative of a Sibiu-based company (the denouncer) to pay him a monthly sum of EUR 2,000 in order to approve the renting of space within the Culture Centre’s building at an advantageous price for the denouncer’s company. The five-year contract had been signed on December 2011 and the monthly rent of EUR 500 was modest compared to the rents charged for other spaces belonging to the same institution. The EUR 2,000 had to be paid on a monthly basis while the contract was in force. On February 29, 2012, Tomuta Silvestru was caught while he was receiving RON 8,600 from the denouncer. The sum was supposed to be the first installment. Tomuta will be arraigned before the Alba Court, prosecutors seeking to place him under 29-day preventive arrest
