Fencing: Ana Maria Branza wins World Cup stage

Romanian athlete Ana Maria Branza has won the Epee World Cup stage in Barcelona, defeating fellow national Simona Gherman in the final, gsp.ro informs. Olympic runner-up Branza thus chalked up her second consecutive success in Spain, after the one registered in 2011. 240 fencers from 46 countries took part in the World Cup stage. Ana Branza defeated Czech Republic’s Martina Olexova in the first stage, score 15-7, while Simona Gherman defeated China’s Sheng Lin, score 15-14. The two players went on to defeat Italy’s Vannesa Galanti (15-8) and South Korea’s Jung Hyo-Jung (15-13); Hungary’s Szasz Emese (15-9) and America’s Courtney Hurley (15-13); Italy’s Quondamcarlo (15-9) and Russia’s Semiankina (15-14). In the semifinals, Simona defeated Magdalena Piekarska (15-12), while Ana defeated China’s Sun Yujie (10-8). The Romanian team (winner of two world and four European titles) entered the teams’ event on Sunday evening.
