Poll: 80 percent of Romanians accept mining projects in areas affected by unemployment

According to an opinion poll conducted by the Romanian Institute for Evaluation and Strategy (IRES), over 80 per cent of Romanians consider that the agreement for the Rosia Montana mining project is acceptable, a communiqué remitted by the Coordinating Council of the Support Group for Rosia Montana Project (GSPRM) informs. “The gold mining project at Rosia Montana is the largest industrial investment in Romania in recent years. This poll basically shows that Romanians need jobs more than ever and support job-creating investments,” University Professor Ovidiu Nicolescu, President of the Council of SMEs in Romania (CNIPMMR) and member of GSPRM, stated. Moreover, almost 90 per cent of respondents consider that reopening mines is a solution for mining areas affected by unemployment.  Apart from creating jobs, which 67 per cent of respondents recognize as a benefit that the Project would bring about, most Romanians (60 per cent) consider that the mining project would contribute to the whole region’s economic development.
