The National Bank of Romania (BNR) announced yesterday a reference exchange rate of RON 4.3672/EUR, up by RON 0.0064 from Wednesday’s rate (RON 4.3608/EUR), representing the lowest level in the last 21 months and close to the historic low (RON 4.3688/EUR) registered in June 2010, Mediafax informs. The RON also depreciated against the USD, the exchange rate growing by RON 0.0103 to RON 3.3478/USD. The RON/CHF exchange rate grew on Thursday by RON 0.0038 to RON 3.6063/CHF. The exchange rate surpassed the RON 4.37/EUR level at the opening of the interbank trading day on Thursday, after quotes climbed to RON 4.3710 – 4.3730/EUR on the US market during the night as a consequence of the USD’s appreciation in relation to the EUR, a move that led to significant corrections for regional currencies too. The exchange rate started to drop at the opening of the trading day in Bucharest because the players expected an immediate intervention from BNR in order to moderate the RON’s depreciation.
