Neglect, emotional and physical abuse are frequent among children, with 11,936 such cases registered last year alone, the bulk of which happened in their families, announced the Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Protection, answering a Mediafax request. The most numerous notifications from child protection departments regarded neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse, work and sexual exploitation. A number of 2,175 children subjected to such ill-treatment were urgently put into child protection, and criminal investigations were opened against the aggressors in 631 cases. The majority of physical abuse cases, 1,014, happened in children’s families and 25 in education units, a similar trend being noticed with respect to sexual abuse cases, in the family, 256, and school, 10. Two-hundred and ninety-three children 10 to 13 years old were molested, and 269 teens aged 14-17, and 214, 17-9 years old. According to the Labour Ministry, over 65,000 children were reposted as institutionalised late last year, and a further 83,000 had at least one parent gone to work abroad.
