One in two Romanians never used a PC

Half of the Romanians (50 pc) aged between 16 and 74 never used a personal computer (PC), the highest percentage in the European Union (EU), according to data released by Eurostat yesterday. The EU average figure of those who used a PC at least once amounts to 78 PC. Just one position above Romania is Bulgaria, with 55 pc of its population. Among the young generations, 81 pc of the Romanians aged from 16 to 24 used a computer at least once, which is also the lowest figure in the EU, compared to an average of 96 pc at EU level, and 100 pc in countries like Netherlands, Austria, Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and Luxembourg. In Bulgaria, 87 pc of youths used a computer at least once, same as 98 pc of Hungarians. In this context, the minister of Communications, Razvan Mustea said yesterday that Romania has zones with “ultraspeed” internet, “ultra-performing programmers” and “ultra-specialised hackers,” but also too many citizens that still see the internet as “a UFO.”
