Former Metal Galati player dead at 26

Vernica Gomez, who formerly played for women’s volleyball title holders Metal Galati, died in Venezuela at the age of 26. According to the local press, the volleyball player died after she suffered cardiac arrest. She had recently returned to her home country after undergoing tendon surgery. Gomez had suffered an injury while playing for Azerbaijan’s Lokomotiv Baku, the recent winner of the Challenge Cup. Veronica Gomez won the Romanian title with Metal Galati in the 2009/2010 season, finished third in the Russian championship in 2009 and won the “best player” title in Belgium the previous year.
