So this is the time to make sure our preparations are on track as we enter the final stretch,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at the start of the series of ministerial meetings. Together, defence and foreign ministers are also discussing the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan, ISAF. Today, the foreign ministers of the 22 non-NATO countries which contribute to ISAF, will join the meeting to discuss how to make sure that the transition to full Afghan security responsibility succeeds, and how to offer continued support to the Afghans once it is completed. Also today, the 28 NATO foreign ministers will be joined by Foreign Minister Lavrov of Russia for a session of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC). This year marks the 10th anniversary of the foundation of the NRC, making the meeting a good chance to take stock of the progress which has been made on practical cooperation. The talks will focus on areas where NATO and Russia can strengthen cooperation such as counter-terrorism, Afghanistan, fighting piracy , maritime search and rescue and counter-narcotics.
