Klaus Johannis, who will be seeking a fourth term as mayor of Sibiu in the election June 10, said Friday, after a session where the county organisation the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania (FDGR) picked its candidates in local elections, he would be glad to learn his popularity remained intact. His opponents in the mayoral race include Dragos Florea of the Conservative Party (PC) on behalf of the Social-Liberal Union (USL) and local councilor Mariana Brunchea on the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) ticket. Alexandru Gheorghe, a reserve lieutenant who protested in military garb in Bucharest’s University Square, is also reported to run as an independent, on the list of the National Christian and Democratic Party (PNDC), with his mayoral bid to be formally submitted next week. Alexandru Gheorghe told Mediafax, he will “make a tandem” with Cornel Lupu, a Sibiu university professor to run on the PNDC ticket for chairman of the Sibiu County Council. Other Sibiu County Council chairmanship candidates include d PSD Deputy Ioan Cindrea, (USL), and Deputy Cornel Stirbet (PDL).
