Atlassib boss sentenced to one and a half years in jail

High Court judges have sentenced businessman Ilie Carabulea to one and a half years in jail in the Apostu case. The sentence is executory. Thus, millionaire Ilie Carabulea, one of the richest people in Sibiu, was sentenced for bribery. Carabulea was involved in the case alongside Florin Apostu, former top prosecutor with the Sibiu Prosecutor’s Office. The latter’s executory sentence was hiked to five years in jail. The court’s decision is final. According to prosecutors, in 2010 Florin Apostu received RON 4,000 from defendant Carabulea in exchange for making sure the businessman obtained favourable decisions in the court cases in which he was involved. Former Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) agent Tiberiu Popescu, Apostu’s direct accessory, was sentenced to two and a half years in jail. Sebastian and Mihaela Carstea were sentenced two 14 months in jail, while defendant Nicolae Botea was fined RON 1,000. Florin Apostu and Tiberiu Narcis Popescu were deferred to court for bribery, intercession, forgery in official documents, use of forgery and being accessories to bribery. Nicolae Botea was deferred to court for bribery. In November 2010 the High Court accepted the anticorruption prosecutors’ request to switch the case from the Alba Iulia Court of Appeals to the Constanta Court of Appeals. On October 27, 2010 the High Court magistrates had decided to place Florin Apostu and Tiberiu Narcis Popescu under preventive arrest for corruption. The High Court admitted the prosecutors’ appeal against the decision taken by the Alba Iulia Court of Appeals. On October 22 the court had rejected the anticorruption prosecutors’ request to have the two defendants placed under arrest, and had decided to place the two under 29-day preventive arrest. Ilie Carabulea is associate and manager of the commercial companies that are part of the Atlassib Holding Sibiu. Until yesterday, when he resigned, he was also President and member of Carpatica Bank’s Administrative Board. As top prosecutor with the Sibiu Prosecutor’s Office, Florin Apostu decided to dismiss 56 criminal cases on behalf of subordinate prosecutors, without them being aware of that.
