District 3 Mayor Robert Negoita and District 4 Mayor Cristian Popescu Piedone filed their candidacies yesterday. “I won’t conduct a negative campaign, I respect all of my competitors and I’ll allow them to present their projects,” Popescu Piedone stated for Mediafax. Businessman Irinel Columbeanu had a “surprise,” his candidacy for the Bucharest City Hall being challenged by UNPR Vice President Nicolae Popescu who claims that Columbeanu wants to run as representative of a party that no longer exists. On the other hand, MEP Laszlo Tokes continued his attacks against UDMR, attacking the party’s “tactic” of using its “second echelon” in the race for the Oradea City Hall and the Bihor County Council. “In my opinion an honest Romanian candidate is more appropriate than a corrupt Hungarian one,” Tokes stated, referring to the fact that UDMR has nominated former Health Minister Cseke Attila as its candidate for the Oradea City Hall. The attacks against UDMR do not stop here though. Two leaders of the Popular Party of Magyars in Transylvania (PPMT) accuse UDMR of “terrorizing” the Hungarian population in order to force ethnic Hungarians to vote for the party, the most serious cases being registered in Salaj County.
