Electoral threshold to be eliminated

PSD President Victor Ponta stated on Monday that the electoral threshold will be eliminated through an amendment filed within the Lower Chamber. He announced that next Tuesday the Lower Chamber’s Juridical Commission will finalize its report on the Parliamentary elections law, the report set to include an amendment on eliminating the electoral threshold. The PSD President admitted that the criticism brought against maintaining the electoral threshold were legitimate and pointed out that a candidate that wins a majority of votes in an electoral college cannot be prevented from entering Parliament. Also yesterday, UDMR President Kelemen Hunor stated that the electoral system that USL proposes “is a political catastrophe for Romania, a political tsunami,” and announced that if the draft voted by the Senate goes through the Lower Chamber then UDMR will notify the Constitutional Court.
