EU funds for fisheries might be suspended

Agriculture Minister Daniel Constantin received yesterday from the EU Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Maria Damanaki a warning concerning the Operational Programme for Fisheries, a programme whose payments in Romania have been interrupted since mid-January and could be “suspended” because of several irregularities discovered in the control and management procedures, HotNews.ro informs. After meeting the commissioner yesterday in Brussels, Daniel Constantin announced that the entire Management Authority leadership that handled this programme could be sacked. Romania’s Operational Programme for Fisheries had a budget of EUR 307,618,942.7 in 2007-2013, of which EUR 230,714,207 represented the European contribution. Payments from this programme have been suspended for five months now, the reimbursements to beneficiaries being made from the state budget. Romanian authorities have until mid-July to remedy all irregularities discovered by EC experts, otherwise Romania risks financial corrections on this programme.
