Complex, dynamic bilateral relations

ANDREI MARGA, Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs:

Each year on May 17, our warmest thoughts of happiness and prosperity go to the Norwegian people. It is the anniversary of the Constitution Day, the National Day of Norway. Romania and the Kingdom of Norway enjoy a historical friendship strengthened by a close cooperation on the European arena. Our countries have entered into their largest ever cooperation agreement. The signing this spring of the two Memoranda of Understanding on the implementation of both the Norwegian Financial Mechanism 2009-2014 and the European Economic Area (EEA) Financial Mechanism 2009-2014 will definitely reinforce our bilateral relations and will give a new impetus to our political agenda.Romania is the second biggest beneficiary state receiving 190.75 million Euro through the EEA Grants and 115.2 million Euro through the Norway Grants. I am confident that through an efficient use of the Norwegian grants Romania will achieve its main goal, of reaching the economic convergence with the EU average. Through well-targeted programmes, important fields of activity such as justice and home affairs, social development, research and professional training, cultural heritage, environment and renewable energy, will further improve and strengthen their capacities. There is a tremendous potential for increasing the economic and trade cooperation between Romania and the Kingdom of Norway. We are interested in stimulating the Norwegian business community to invest in Romania, especially in the energy sector, in areas as carbon capture and storage, renewable, and energy efficiency. In the international fora, Romania and the Kingdom of Norway endorse common positions on the most important global dossiers and act together as reliable partners within the framework of UN and NATO with a view to promoting peace, security and stability in Europe’s neighbourhood and worldwide. All these elements are proofs of the complex and dynamic relations between our countries. I express my confidence in the further development of the Romanian- Norwegian cooperation. On the occasion of this anniversary moment, I convey my warmest congratulations to the Norwegian People, along with my wishes of success and prosperity.”
