The top priority of the Romanian Post Office’s new leadership is to drastically lower the number of leadership and administrative positions and to keep the company afloat. In an interview for HotNews.ro on Thursday, Ion Smeeianu, who was appointed on May 11 President of the Romanian Post Office’s Administrative Council and General Manager, stated: “If we fail to properly manage the vectors in what concerns the payment of debts owed to the state budget, the shareholders’ reorganization plans as well as trade union tendencies, we risk filing for insolvency.” The same opinion is supported by Communications Minister Dan Nica, who announced that today the Board of Directors of the Romanian Post is going to discuss the restructuring plan to avoid bankruptcy.The company currently owes RON 210 M to the state budget, of which approximately RON 105 M is a fine issued by the Competition Council. In what concerns the reorganization, the new leadership seeks to rebalance the directly productive personnel (postmen, counter workers) with the administrative, auxiliary and support personnel. “At this moment the Romanian Post Office has approximately 36,000 employees. First we will try to lay off approximately 1,000 employees, 950 of which will represent leadership and administrative personnel. I can’t give you an exact figure in what concerns the second stage because it depends on the case-by-case evaluation of each employee. This organizational chart is being negotiated and we deem that it will probably become operational in a week’s time provided trade unions agree with what we proposed. It depends on how fast negotiations between the administration and trade union end,” Smeeianu added.
