Court clears Arad Mayor Gheorghe Falca of all charges

The Alba Tribunal yesterday acquitted the mayor of Arad, Gheorghe Falca, of all charges in the case dating back since 2007 that had him accused of bribe taking and misuse of authority against public interests. The verdict may be challenged in a superior court, within 10 days. The court also acquitted the three other defendants in the same case. Gheorghe Falca, the godson of President Traian Basescu, was sent in court for a suspect real estate transaction he made in 2005. DNA prosecutors established that, in March 2005, Gheorghe Falca – in his position of Arad mayor – received from officials of the Elecon Plus company a property whose value exceeded by EUR 111,550 the price of the apartment he gave in exchange. According to prosecutors, the transaction was meant to enlist the mayor’s support in obtaining at undervalued price a plot of land that belonged to the Arad Local Council, situated downtown.
