Romania rated among world’s top 15 exporters of organic raw materials

Romania is a leader in South-Eastern Europe when it comes to organic agriculture and is among the world’s top 15 exporters of organic raw materials, Marian Cioceanu, President of the “Bio Romania” Association of Organic Agriculture Operators, stated during a conference. “Romania is an outlet for the extraordinarily large demand for organic products in Europe and the US, and the offer is limited. An American billionaire was saying that we have to buy land because it is out of production and the one in existence is dwindling. Millions of hectares of agricultural land are disappearing. On the other hand, the existing agricultural land is dwindling, is becoming degraded and is increasingly contaminated with these chemical substances used in conventional agriculture,” Cioceanu stated. According to the aforementioned source, the sector’s greatest problem is the lack of processing units, Romania exporting more raw materials than processed products. In Romania there are currently only 90 processing units that can handle organic raw materials, most of them processing honey, cereals, dairy, wine, pasta and rice.
