The spokeswoman of the Mures County Police, Livia Popa yesterday announced that the institution is probing a blaze that did minor damage to the ‘Avram Iancu’ Memorial House of Targu Mures, which is also the HQ of a homonymous association. Sources with the Mures Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, quoted by Mediafax, said that the fire might have been started by petrol bombs. According to Livia Popa, the incident occurred Monday and, after putting off the blaze, firefighters found a bottle of liquid in the attic of the building, while bottle shards were found in front of the building. Police opened a probe into the case. Police sources added that firefighters were able to put off the fire before it produced significant damage, and only one beam was partly burnt. This is not the first time that the Avram Iancu Memorial house is vandalised. In the past years, too, unknown vandals destroyed the flag placed on the building, the plaques with inscriptions and the tourist indicators. The press suspects a connection between the incident and the Romanian-Hungarian tensions provoked by the reburial of Hungarian poet Jozsef Nyiro in Romania.
