The leader of the group was identified as a young man aged 24, living in Piatra Neamt, known in the virtual environment under the nicknames of ‘lulzcart, anonsboat, anonsweb, cartman.’ Together with two other suspects, he formed a group of 14 involved in acts of cyber-terrorism under the name of Anonymous Romania. The group had a vast criminal activity specific to IT crime, which consisted in illegally accessing computer systems, stealing confidential data and posting them on the internet. Most of the confidential/classified databases were administered by institutions and public legal entities from Romania and abroad. The cyber-attacks launched against servers and web pages were conducted through the method of SQL Injection, using various software programmes like Havij, SQL Map etc. In most cases, after compromising and gaining unauthorized access to the targeted sites, the members of the group modified the data via Deface attacks by replacing the main page of the site with another web page containing messages and links that claimed the attack and promoted the hacker group Anonymous Romania. The members of the group launched cyber-attacks against 29 sites, including that of the Romanian Institute of Economic-Social Research and Polls, a site of the Romanian military, and several government sites.
