Floods continue to affect dozens of localities

The flood warning was extended today in Covasna, Harghita and Brasov counties.

Hydrologists extended until this morning their flood warning for the Negru River and the upper and middle basin of the Olt River in the Covasna, Harghita and Brasov counties. Meanwhile, abundant rainfalls flooded dozens of localities. 13 localities were affected by heavy rains in Buzau County, dozens of households being flooded, while several roads and bridges were destroyed or damaged. In some areas landslides were reactivated. At the same time, several communes are in a state of alert in Vrancea County. Thousands of people are at risk of being cut off from the rest of the world. In several counties people struggled against flood waters during the night of Tuesday to Wednesday. Their houses and courtyards were flooded and firefighters were helpless. Dozens of houses were flooded in Braila. The sewerage system was unable to handle the high quantity of water. People were unable to salvage their goods. Firefighters were unable to pump the water out. Powerful rainfalls caused damages in Botosani too. The water blocked traffic in several intersections and flooded a house. Likewise, several cars were left stranded. Caiuti commune, Bacau County, was cut off after the local creek overflowed its banks. The driver of a tip-up truck found himself stranded in the middle of a raging Putna River while he was trying to cross to the other bank. The man found a stretch of solid ground and called for help. Strong currents prevented firefighters from rescuing him by boat, so the man was rescued by helicopter. The rescue operation lasted four hours. The driver was unharmed and did not need hospitalization. The tip-up truck will be recovered only after the Putna River’s level drops. In Valcea County vehicles heavier than 10 tons were banned from traffic on County Road 605A after a bridge was damaged by heavy rainfalls near Berbesti locality. Traffic on the temporary bridge built in Muereasca commune, Valcea County, returned to normal on Tuesday evening. The bridge had been destroyed by a strong flashflood.
