Value of legal assistance contracts struck by state equals EUR 160 M

The value of legal counselling contracts aquired by public institutions, national and majority state shareholding trade companies is of 160 M euro, said PM Victor Ponta, who added: “We’re done with the money plundered from the state on the so-called legal assistance,” Mediafax reports. Asked what his comment was to a previous statement made by Valeriu Stoica, the premier said that Stoica’s reaction “amused” him and his reaction proves “he feels very guilty”. Victor Ponta specified that at stake could be not only the poor execution of a representation contract, but also a fraud attempt in the case of the Romanian Post. The head of the Oversight Body of the PM demanded that state companies and institutions should only report the contracts entered with the law firm “Stoica and Associates” and only for the interval 2009-2012, which he extended to all law firms, after Stoica accused being discriminated against. The first address is signed and rubberstamped by the head of the Oversight Body of the PM, State Secretary Ion Lazar, and makes no reference to a law firm other than that run by Valeriu Stoica (Democratic Liberal Party – PDL). Lazar also called on public institution and state company officials that, in case they had no such contracts with the law firm concerned during the mentioned period, they should specify that in the return address.
