President Traian Basescu said yesterday, as he was awarding the judges of the Constitutional Court, that if during his first term as president he had a habit of commenting the decisions made by the Constitutional Court, now as he acquired more experience he reached the conclusion that this is useless. He emphasised that, in the 20 years that passed since its founding, the Constitutional Court has acted of an “irreproachable” manner. “Comments aside, there is but one constitutional truth, that of the Constitutional Court, and no institution of the Romanian state has yet dared to infringe a decision, a verdict or a recommendation of the Constitutional Court. This means that we have a strong court, recognised by everybody,” Basescu said. “Because the plenum of the Constitutional Court is not as large as that of the Government, I invite you for a glass of champagne,” said the president, who spent some time with the judges. The decrees on awarding the decorations were published by the Official gazette last week.
