President Traian Basescu yesterday received the visit of the Chairperson of the Defence Committee of the German Bundestag, Susanne Kastner, who also heads the Romanian-German friendship group and the Romanian-German Forum, who wanted to know his personal opinion on the prospects of Romanian economy, Mediafax informs. The president said Romanian economy, at present, is no more ill than the European average, but also no healthier. Basescu pointed out that ‘everlasting austerity’ is not a solution either and that Romania would continue to relax the austerity measures adopted in 2009-2010. The president said he was ‘content’ that the Ponta Government had agreed to continue the existing arrangement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), European Union (UE) and the World Bank (WB), the completion of which would make Romanian economy more competitive. The president told German MP Susanne Kastner that Romania had resources for economic growth through the available European funds, but asked for assistance in obtaining in due time a one-year extension of the period when we may spend EU money. Kastner’s visit agenda also included a meeting with PM Victor Ponta yesterday.
