Andrei Marga assures minorities of government support

Foreign Affairs Minister Andrei Marga stated Tuesday that there is no reason to be worried about the manner in which the Ponta Government treats ethnic minorities.“The government is committed to promoting a modern, European and profoundly responsible approach to minorities. In fact, minority representatives have expressed their support for the government,” Marga stated in a Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) communiqué sent to Mediafax. Likewise, he pointed out that the ruling coalition parties have contributed to writing the most substantial part of the current Romanian legislation that guarantees the minorities’ rights and they constantly promote dialogue with their organizations, irrespective of some ethnic minority leaders’ or parties’ political options.Marga pointed out that ethnic minorities in Romania benefit from Parliamentary representation, the possibility of studying their maternal languages in all levels of education (primary, secondary, tertiary), the state’s financial support for cultural and educational projects, the compulsory use of bilingual signs in localities in which minorities surpass 20 per cent of the population, the possibility of using maternal languages in their relation with local authorities and within the justice system in localities that have minorities. In other developments, UDMR President Kelemen Hunor stated that the party he represents has sought various solutions in order to obtain a majority within county and local councils in Transylvania, by forming local alliances both with the Social-Liberal Union (USL) and the Democrat-Liberal Party (PDL), so that the Magyar community will not be left without political representation. The Hungarian leader stated yesterday that the only restriction concerning the creation of local alliances targeted Dan Diaconescu’s People’s Party (PPDD), a party with which UDMR is not willing to negotiate.
