National Flag Day celebrated throughout Romania

The Romanian tricolour flag was celebrated in the entire country yesterday. In a message sent on the occasion, President Traian Basescu called upon Romanians to hoist and show the due respect to the national flag. ‘June 26 was declared by law the Day of the National Flag. A symbol of the Romanian people’s fight for freedom, the National Flag is a reminder to every Romanian citizen of their sacred duty of serving their country with faith, defending the unity, sovereignty and independence of Romania at all cost’, reads  the president’s message published by the Presidential Administration. Prime Minister Victor Ponta, on his part, in a message of his own thanked all those Romanians who make it possible for the Romanian flag to be displayed through their performance anywhere they may be.  The Day of the National Flag was introduced to mark the day of June 26, 1848, when the Revolutionary Government passed a decree declaring the tricolour flag the representation of the principle of equality, the upright setting of colours standing for verticality and figure three being the perfect number.
