European Parliament President Martin Schulz, who met the Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta on Wednesday in the European Parliament in Brussels said, on the eve of the meeting: “We are monitoring the events in Romania very closely. We seem to be witnessing a political fight of a surprising intensity between two irreconcilable camps. Should there be any breaches of European rules and standards, the European Commission should take action immediately. We are a Union of shared values and legal standards, which must be respected by all of its members without exception. It is our duty to act if these are violated.” On the other hand, Reding said on Tuesday that without a quick reversal of moves taken by the prime minister, including revoking an emergency ordinance that reduced the powers of the constitutional court and reinstating a national ombudsman, Romania’s bid to join Schengen would be jeopardized.
