The European Commission prepares a letter to interrupt one of the payments requested by National Company for Highways and National Roads (CNADNR) within a contract addressing the construction of Arad – Nadlac highway due to “irregularities and fraud suspicions having been identified”. A reference to a possible payment interruption is also included in an official document received by Mediafax and written following the talks between Romania’s EU Ambassador, Mihnea Motoc, ten days ago on July 3, and Walter Deffaa, director general of DG Regio (General Directorate for Regional Policy within EC) and Angela Martinez Sarasola, head of the Unit for Romania within this directorate.During these talks, the EC representatives expressed several discontents triggered by a high risk of suspension for the programmes managed by DG REGIO. Official sources declared that the highway referred to in this case is Arad – Nadlac.PM Victor Ponta confirmed the information on a possible interruption by the EC of payments due for the construction of Arad – Nadlac highway, and indicated that the issue was a direct consequence of PDL Ministers having awarded a dedicated contract to a company in close relationship with this party. In answer to a question whether this was not a company owned by Nelu Iordache, PM was positive. Businessman Nelu Iordache also runs the company Romstrade, involved in the construction of Arad – Nadlac highway.
