Radu Jude lands big prize in Sarajevo Film Festival

The feature film ‘Everybody in our family’ directed by Radu Jude yesterday received the Heart of Sarajevo, the big prize of the international Sarajevo Film Festival taking place July 6-14, according to Mediafax. The film tells with humour the story of a father and his daughter who want to spent heavenly holidays together, but who are instead caught up in the hell of earthly family relationships. Serban Pavlu, Sofia Nicolaescu, Mihaela Sirbu and Gabriel Spahiu appear in the lead parts, with special appearance by Tamara Buciuceanu-Botez, Stela Popescu and Alexandru Arsinel.Radu Jude’s feature film premiered at the Berlin International Film festival this year and is the director’s second movie. His first feature film was ‘The happiest girl in the world’, which obtained the CICAE award at the Berlinale in 2009.  But that was not the only Romanian award obtained in Sarajevo this year. Ivana Mladenovic got the Heart of Sarajevo Award for Best Documentary Film for ’Turn Off the Lights’ based on a script written by herself and Bianca Oana. The documentary had its world premiere at the New York Tribeca festival in April. Having served a few years in prison, three young men start rediscovering the realities of life in freedom, marked by aggression and excesses, in the Roma community where they live. Among them there is Alex, a captivating character with an annoyingly blasé attitude towards violence, women and guilt. Short film ‘Daddy Rulz’ by Radu Potcoava received a Special Jury Mention. It is the second short film produced by MediaPro Pictures after ‘Bora Bora’ directed by Bogdan Mirica – winner of the dedicated section of the Transylvania Film Festival (TIFF) and short-listed for prestigious film festivals such as those in Locarno, Warsaw or Thessaloniki. The film presents the apparently very common life of a family living in the Bucharest Colentina neighbourhood, ground by financial shortcomings. Tavi (Gavril Patru) and Cati (Ioana Flora) are about to lose their apartment because of debt. Their only son, Andrei, is in his rebellion period and ends up in the most dangerous of entourages. Tavi finds him with an underworld person and has to intervene. For that, endangers his family and seeks the help of some of the biggest crime heads for whom, in his youth, Tavi spent time in prison. Not least, the ‘Totonel’ project by Alexander Nanau was awarded the Special Mention in the ‘Work in Progress’ section.
