Eighteen persons, including three children, were injured yesterday after two trams collided in Bucharest. The victims were taken to the Elias, University, Grigore Alexandrescu, Floreasca and Bagdasar hospitals, having suffered concussions and traumas. Five of them suffered more serious lesions but their lives are not at risk according to doctors. Traffic was rerouted. One of the tram drivers was tested with the breathalyzer, the result being negative. The District 5 Court’s prosecutor’s office has opened a criminal file. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the two trams that were traveling in opposite directions collided because the switch point suddenly changed without the tram driver’s intervention. In its turn, the Bucharest Public Transportation Administration (RATB) has started an internal investigation in order to establish the cause of the crash. The Labor Inspectorate announced that yesterday’s crash was labeled a work accident because one of the tram drivers was injured and taken to hospital.
