More than 90 Romanian intellectuals tell EU rule of law is respected in Romania

In an action meant to explain to European officials the events that took place on the Romanian political scene, events that led to the suspension of President Traian Basescu, a group of Romanian intellectuals – university professors, researchers, writers and artists – sent an open letter to several European Council officials that publicly expressed their concern for the rule of law principles in Romania, Jurnalul National online informs. “We express a non-partisan point of view. Our only goal is to defend democratic principles and the rule of law, as we always did starting in December 1989. Now we are profoundly worried by the external reactions to the recent political events in our country. We hope that this letter will help clarify any erroneous conceptions on the current situation and will open a dialogue for the future,” the letter reads.
