Gov’t promises firefighting helicopters

Premier Victor Ponta announced that the government will earmark funds for the procurement of one helicopter or the repair of helicopters that the Internal Affairs Ministry (MAI) already uses for emergency situations in each region. The Head of Government attended the ceremony that marked the delivery of the second Eurocopter Romania helicopter for the Emergency Medical Service (SMURD). “In recent days we are unfortunately dealing with a dangerous phenomenon, that of fires. The Finance Ministry informed me this morning that it managed to find the financial resources necessary in order to try and take measures by buying a helicopter or repairing the helicopters that are already used by the MAI but whose flight hours have expired or are about to expire. The government is ready to make this financial effort tomorrow during its meeting,” Ponta said. The fire that started 10 days ago in the Bucegi Mountains was contained on Monday after a firefighting helicopter dumped approximately 7 tons of water. Yesterday firefighters started to create a protective buffer zone by eliminating vegetation around the area affected by fire. The action is very difficult since the fire is located in a very steep area at an altitude of 1,700 meters. The forest fire that started at the end of last week in the Sureanu Mountains, Alba County, was put out on the night of Monday to Tuesday, firefighters pulling out from the area.
