The referendum – most likely to be invalidated

According to the exit polls released by Realitatea TV, the turnout for the referendum at 21.00 hours to impeach president Traian Basescu was of 44.01 per cent. No less than 86.9 per cent of the votes cast were in favour of impeaching president Traian Basescu, while 13.1 per cent of the ballot said ‘no’. If the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) confirms the exit polls it means that president Traian Basescu will return to the Cotroceni Palace.

Traian Basescu claimed victory at 11 pm, while interim president Crin Antonescu said Romania proved it is a democratic country.

‘The Romanians decided their future, by rejecting the ‘coup d’etat,’ Basescu said, vowing to try to make up with all factions of the society after he is back to the Cotroceni Palace.

Interim president Crin Antonescu said the Romanians have written a new page of Romanian history. ‘We have won something undeniable today,’ Antonescu said.
