BNR lent EUR 2.6 bln to eight banks

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) yesterday lent RON 12,07 bln (2,6 bln euro) to eight banks for one week, aside from the RON 8.15 bln (1.77 bln euro) last week. Repo auctions are a means for the BNR to provide commercial banks with liquidity in exchange for state bonds at the key interest of 5.25 pc a year, Mediafax reports. The sums lent and the number of borrowing banks rose significantly during June, after the BNR increased to five from three late May the number of state bond issues a bank can use as collateral for a money market operation.
