Former ANAF head Blejnar officially under criminal investigation

He and his former aide Codrut Marta are accused of tax evasion and of supporting members of an organized crime group, the two caused damages of RON 21.3 M.

Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) prosecutors started to
investigate former National Fiscal Administration Agency (ANAF) chief Sorin Blejnar and his former
aide Codrut Marta in a case in which they are accused of being complicit to tax evasion and of supporting
an organized crime group, Mediafax informs.
Sorin Blejnar arrived at the DIICOT headquarters in Brasov where prosecutors presented their charges. When leaving, Blejnar stated that he came in order to give statements concerning a case that is currently investigated, without giving
other details. Blejnar did not answer when he was asked whether he came as a defendant or as a witness.
The members of the group supported by Blejnar and Marta allegedly set up an ample tax evasion mechanism in order to avoid paying excises for approximately 5,000 tons of imported diesel oil.
The state budget was thus deprived of over RON 10.5 M in VAT and over RON 10.8 M in diesel oil excises, the damage totaling over RON 21.3 M.
Investigators also established that from March 2010 to July 2010 ten persons, including Italian and Hungarian citizens, set up,  coordinated and supported an organized crime group which,  using a tax evasion mechanism,
avoided paying excises for over 5,000 tons of imported diesel oil.
“In fact, from March to July  2010, defendants Morcov Cecilian, Kelemen Andrei, Sztufliak Peter, Monea Claudiu, Ciobanu Dorel and Cuccina Salvatore, set up an organized crime group with crossborder ties, a group joined by
another 20 persons with Romanian, Italian and Hungarian citizenships, a group specialized in tax evasion activities with fuel products,”  a DIICOT communiqué reads. The crime group was supported by officials from ANAF and
the Brasov County Department of Excises and Custom Operations (DJAOV Brasov), officials that conducted formal verifications or that prevented verifications into the companies involved.
