US official to meet with Antonescu today

Assistant Secretary Philip Gordon (photo) arrived yesterday to Bucharest, where he will meet with senior government officials to discuss the concerns the United States has regarding recent government actions that threaten democratic checks and balances and weaken independent institutions. Gordon will also meet with members of civil society and the business community to discuss how their work plays a role in strengthening the democratic values and principles that unite the transatlantic community, according to the US Department of State.
According to the Presidential Administration’s announcement, Interim president Crin Antonescu, too, will meet with Philip Gordon la at Cotroceni Palace, 13.00 hours. This is Philip Gordon’s first official visit to Bucharest. The American official might also meet with PM Victor Ponta, Mediafax reports.
National Liberal Party (PNL) MEP Ramona Manescu on Saturday said that Gordon will carry the first talks with officials of the administration in Bucharest, who are also leaders of the Social Liberal Union (USL) and are to enlighten him on the current political situation in Romania.
“We are learning every day that Mr. Basescu, through his people, supporters in various state structures, continues their misinforming abroad, and I find it absolutely normal for the United States and the  EU to want to talk with Romanian officials, the USL leaders that is, with whom they can clarify the situation,” the PNL MEP also said.
