ARCEN: Decision to stop TVR Cultural illustrates the crisis of values

The Romanian Association for Culture, Education and Normality (ARCEN) protests against the decision to stop the emission of TVR Cultural, saying that this is not a solution for the economic recovery of the Romanian Television, Mediafax reports. In the ARCEN protest that will be sent to the Administration Board of the Romanian Television Company (SRTv), to PM victor Ponta, the Minister of Education and the Minister of Culture, the Association warns that taking off the air the only cultural television in Romania illustrates the crisis of values in the Romanian society.“Of late, we have witnessed aberrant political decisions, which deal fatal blows to public cultural institutions: first the ICR, now TVR Cultural. (…) In a Romania of tabloids, of political talk-shows that became entertainment of the basest level, a Romania where illiteracy is on the increase and the number of those who passed the baccalaureate is decreasing, the decision is made to restrain the space dedicated to culture,” reads the ARCEN protest. According to the Association, “TVR Cultural represents an apolitical environment where intellectuals, cultural operators and the people with constructive ideas meet.” According to ARCEN, the budget of TVR Cultural represents 1.7 pc of the budget of the Romanian television, and stopping this channel does not represent a solution for the economic recovery of the public television.A petition against the decision to stop TVR Cultural, posted Friday on the internet site petitieonline.ro, after the top management of SRTv announced the measure, gathered 4,000 signatures so far.
