PM Ponta: Basescu’s statements shook financial market confidence in Romania

Premier Victor Ponta on Tuesday said that it were the irresponsible statements made by Traian Basescu and the leaders of the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL) rather than the political crisis surrounding the president’s suspension that  shook the confidence of financial markets in this country and dented Romania’s image abroad, a view also held by Crin Antonescu, Mediafax reports. Antonescu, also on Tuesday, said he would not “swallow” the story about the economy being affected by Traian Basescu’s suspension, nor is he interested in the comments by National Bank of Romania (BNR) Governor Mugur Isarescu, when asked about the RON depreciation being due to the political crisis. Antonescu’s statements came when asked how the fight would carry on against Traian B?sescu given the impact the two months of presidential interimship had on the Romanian economy. Antonescu was also asked how could the regime be fought against without the fight bearing an economic impact, also considering the messages from the BNR governor, to which Antonescu had this to say: “Never, never ever will a man who believes in democracy, and I’m talking about the average citizen here, find convincing the argument “Don’t say anything, swallow it, don’t express your will because the RON falls”.
