FM Corlatean: Geert Wilders’ asylum statement, worrying and unacceptable

Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean describes as worrying and unacceptable the statements made by the leader of the Dutch Freedom Party (PVV) Geert Wilders over the asylum policy, adding that, given the lack of a relevant agreement between the two states, the creation is not allowed of a “waiting zone” for asylum seekers. The Romanian FM also said that the European norms in force, such as Regulation 343/2002, establish clear mechanisms and criteria that determine the member state responsible for examining an asylum application and for handling the situation of the applicant. “Given the absence of a specific agreement between two or several member states, the creation is not allowed of a so-called “waiting area” for asylum seekers. Any initiative aimed at modifying the European norms in effect belongs to the  European Commission, such amendment going to be operated with the consent of EU member states by qualified majority voting,” Mediafax quoted a MAE communique as stating.  PVV leader Geert Wilders wants that some centers be set up for asylum seekers from countries such as Romania, in order to discourage immigration to The Netherlands, Wednesday’s Algemeen Dagblad reports, quoted by Le Vif/L’Express online. Under the PVV plan, any seeker of asylum in The Netherlands should be sent abroad, where he will wait until a decision is reached on his application.  Geert Wilders considers that such plan would offer “spectacular advantages” to the Netherlands.
