‘Elie Wiesel’ Institute under PM’s authority

The control upon the ‘Elie Wiesel’ National Institute for Studying the Holocaust in Romania will be transferred from the Ministry of Culture and Cults (MC) to the prime minister, under a government decision published by the Official Gazette. “The Institute has as activity object identifying, gathering, archiving, researching, publishing documents and solving scientific problems related to the Holocaust, devising and implementing educational and cultural programmes regarding this historic phenomenon,” reads the government decision adopted on August 23. The director of the ‘Elie Wiesel’ Institute, Florian Alexandru said Thursday that the move was decided at the demand of the Institute, with the purpose of an increased “prestige and visibility.” According to Mediafax, Florian Alexandru explained that the Institute requested, via a memorandum, being transferred from the Culture Ministry to the prime minister, ever since last autumn.
